Yes, it was good. Light and Building 2014 and the Luminale did not disappoint.
It was good to have been there, good to have met so many interesting friends and colleagues, good to see the technological development taking place at great speed, good to enjoy the art and the science of good lighting being presented in such an exciting compact way.
It was a week of inspiring conversations, a mix of practice and vision. It was also hard work of course, dealing with the ongoing everyday office in the hotel before breakfast, balancing laptop and iPhone while traveling on the underground, pushing through the crowds and having an ear for the impressive possibilities being demonstrated by the ambitious representatives of the lighting industry. It is always an inspiration to be among so many lighting experts from all “walks of life” and all corners of the world. It is truly a universal subject and a profession where the cross fertilization of the local and the global is of immeasurable benefit to all. Lighting our cities of the future, no matter how big or small, is a question of getting the balance right between energy consumption and the desire for beauty and security. However difficult, I say that doing more with less is possible with intelligent lighting design concepts. That is our task and we need to communicate it better and quicker.
On another note let me say that Frankfurt is a great city; it is a joy after a long day at the trade fair to walk back to the hotel along the river. I have returned with increased knowledge and enthusiasm for the coming lighting projects.
