Ruairí O'Brien. Architecture. Light. Art.
15-01-10
Ruairí O'Brien presented his Light Masterplan for the famous health resort town of Rathen, located in the heart of the moutainous area known as the Switzerland of Saxony. Saxon Switzerland (German: Sächsische Schweiz) is a mountainous climbing area and national park near Dresden in Saxony, Germany. It continues as the Bohemian Switzerland in the Czech Republic. Saxon Switzerland alone has some 1,000 climbing peaks, as well as several hollows. The area is popular with Dresden locals and international climbers.
The administrative district for the area is Sächsische Schweiz. The fortress of Königstein is a well-known landmark, which is located close to the health and holiday resort of Rathen.
The light Masterplan developed by O'Brien was motivated by the astounding landscape and local natural attractions which also inspired such writers as Karl May to create a unique "Day and Night" lighting concept. The "Masterplan" is a complex work which combines all the facets of Lighting design and technology, functionality, energy, sustainibilty, economics and art. All the elements of city and regional planning are taken into account from the permanent street lighting to event lighting. The lighting created will encourage visitors and inhabitants of the town not only to enjoy the beauty of the resort at all times of year, Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn but also to "see" the town with "New and ever changing eyes".
"Such a Lighting Masterplan allows a region, a city, a town or a community to think ahead and combine short term interests and ideas with a long term planning process. This increases the chances of success because targets and visions, which require clear economical, innovative and aesthical decisions can be made in a understandable and transparent manner and be duely communicated.
Among other design ideas and elements presented in the "Lighting Masterplan" O'Brien will use special glass elements to interact with direct sunlight and artificial light which can produce spectacular and poetic moments throughout the day and the night.
The work produced will form the basis for future lighting and regional marketing discussions and decisions.
