The "Day of
Architecture", which is celebrated every year over a summer weekend
in Germany, gives architects the chance to communicate directly with the
public. This is very important for the reputation of our profession. A
profession which is very often described as being aloof, elitist and distanced
from everyday life and the true needs of society.
Good architecture is everywhere but often not
seen. Why is this? We should ask the users and such occasions give us a good
opportunity to open the dialog as to the why.
On this day, and everyother day for that matter, we should take the chance to communicate what we mean by good architecture, to explain
and tell the story of architecture, how it is made, why we need it and what we
must do to create sustainable lively cities, healthy workspaces, affordable
housing and uplifting places of recreation.
This year I was asked by the chamber of architects in Saxony to chair the
press conference for the opening of “Tag der Architektur”. The conference took
place in a new inner city shopping center designed by my colleague’s haenel furkert architekten in Dresden.
It was my pleasure to emphasize that shopping centers are also a part of our Baukultur. They should not be under estimated
in their importance or in their contribution to everyday life in the city. They
are logistically complex in the planning, need to be easily understood and used
by the nonprofessional and they provide places of work and leisure for large
numbers of citizens.
In this particular case, there was also the need to include in the
ambitious development a heritage-protected tower block designed and
built by Hermann Paulick in
1929. This added to the difficulty and at the same time to the overall
significance of the project.
Together, the client and the architects, managed to save the heritage
building for future generations by the creation of something new and that is a story worth telling.

Dresden. Am 27. und 28. Juni findet zum 20. Mal der Tag der Architektur statt. Er steht diesmal unter dem Motto "Architektur hat Bestand". Für die Dresdner beitet das kommende Wochenende die Möglichkeit, in der Stadt 25 Gebäude zu besichtigen, zu denen man sonst entweder gar nicht oder nicht so ohne weiteres Zutritt hat, zum Beispiel das noch im Umbau steckende Hochhaus am Albertplatz.
Am 2. Juli wird neben dem markanten Hochhaus das neue Einkaufszentrum in der Dresdner Neustadt eröffnet. Investor Peter Simmel bietet hier auf 3800 Quadratmetern Fläche seinen großen Erlebnis-Lebensmittelmarkt. Weitere Flächen sind an Aldi, Rossmann und Medimax vermietet. Zudem sollen im Hochhaus ein Gewürzladen und ein Eisenbahnwaggon-Restaurant entstehen.
Das kommende Wochenende bietet Gelegenheit, nicht nur den Neubau schon einmal vorab zu besichtigen und sich über die baulichen und architektonischen Besonderheiten zu informieren. Denn die Architekten Stephan Hänel und Alf Furkert vom Dresdner Büro hänel furkert architekten wollen in ihren beiden Führungen am Sonnabend 13 und 15 Uhr den Besuchern auch das unter Denkmalschutz stehende markante Hochhaus von innen zeigen. Dort wird zwar noch emsig gebaut. Es ist aber gut sichtbar, was unternommen wurde und wird, um Dresdens ältestes Bürohochhaus und ersten Stahlbeton-Skelettbau zu ertüchtigen und so auszurüsten, dass er noch eine lange Zukunft hat.
Ruairi O‘Brien, selbst Architekt und Vorstand in der Architektenkammer Sachsen, bezeichnet das Projekt von Bauherr Peter Simmel, das Hänel und Furkert planerisch umsetzten, als „lebendige Denkmalpflege“ und „eine Symbiose von Alt und Neu“. Hier werde Vorhandenes durch einen Neubau nicht nur ergänzt, sondern weiterentwickelt.
